Debut of "Letter To Loretta."  Directed by Robert Florey; teleplay by Willie Goldbeck and Dwight Taylor.  The first of a new dramatic series based on letters received by Miss Young requesting advice on personal matters.  She portrays a perfume sales girl who uses desperate methods to test her fiancι’s love.  A young man from a wealthy and socially prominent Philadelphia family falls in love with a New York salesgirl, Carol Brown; he takes her home to meet his family.  An ex-girlfriend tells Carol that Keith’s mother has already made her mind up about her; that she and the rest of the family consider department store sales girls as cheap and vulgar and that she would not have a chance to make a marriage work with Keith.  Carol sets out to prove that Keith loves her no matter what and would make a life with her, even without his family’s blessing.

Directed by Robert Florey; screenplay by Gabrielle Upton.  This exciting drama tests the love of a young wife, Emily, for her handicapped husband trapped in an iron lung after a severe California earthquake.  Physical therapist, Lloyd, has been working with Roy, who is a polio victim confined to an iron lung, to help him breathe on his own.  Roy begins doubting Emily’s love when his sister, Gwen, mentions that she saw Lloyd and Emily holding hands.  That night a severe earthquake strikes and the electricity goes out.  Emily must convince Roy of her love for him so he will fight for his life.  Can she do it?

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY                                Originally aired - 11-01-53

 

Directed by Robert Florey.  One of Helen’s ex-beaus, Jerry Worth, someone who she “almost married,” is a hot new national newscaster.  Helen goes on and on about him and Stan, Helen’s husband, eventually becomes jealous and they bicker when Stan reads in the paper that Jerry Worth will be visiting their town.  That afternoon Helen takes her Grandpa to the pier to fish; she leaves and when she returns, Grandpa goes on and on about a huge fish he almost caught.  Whenever Helen starts talking about Jerry Worth, Grandpa starts talking about the “one that got away.”  Against her Grandpa’s wishes, Helen goes to visit Jerry Worth at his hotel and accidentally runs into Jerry in the hallway.  Unknown to Helen, Stan had decided to visit Jerry Worth himself and he observes their encounter.  What transpires and Stan’s reaction to her “confession” teaches Helen a lesson.

Directed by Robert Florey; screenplay by Dewitt Bodeen and Hugh Beaumont.  This drama takes place in Yorkshire, England in the 1850’s.  The story is based on an incident in the life of the famous novelist, Charlotte Bronte.  Charlotte’s father is rigid and domineering and seems to thwart his daughter’s wishes at whim; Charlotte struggles to assert her independence.  Mr. Bronte withholds his blessing of Charlotte's marriage and Charlotte must make a decision that will affect her and her father's future happiness.

Directed by Robert Florey; teleplay by Richard Morris, based on a story by Robert Thomsen and George Bradshaw.  This is a bittersweet tale of love found, lost, then found again.  Jane Seaton is bound for stardom and the man she loves and has married does not “fit” into her world or so everyone tells her.  Hap, Jane’s husband, leaves Jane, for her sake, to join the Army.  Jane’s world then crumbles and she ends up in a sanitarium.  Chance has it that an army buddy of Hap’s is also a patient there and he finally resolves to help them find each other again.

Directed by Robert Florey; screenplay by William Bruckner.  Pretty Kay Coughlin takes an unemployed young newspaperman under her wing in a plan to make her boyfriend jealous.  Muscle bound, glass-jawed Walter Stone, who has just arrived in town, meets Kay when he attempts to prevent a tramp from snatching her purse.  Kay takes Walter home to nurse his wounds and helps him get a job on the local newspaper.  Walter then agrees to help prod Kay’s boyfriend into a marriage proposal.  The plan works well, but when Paul actually proposes, Kay finds that this does not bring the happiness she expected.  Could she have fallen under the spell of the “laughing boy?”

THE FAITH OF CHATA                                          Originally aired - 12-13-53

 

Directed by Robert Florey; screenplay by Gene Levitt.  This is the drama of a nine-year-old girl nicknamed Chata, who after receiving a small statue of her patron saint, Santa Inez, from her mother, Paula, on her birthday becomes desperately ill with pneumonia.  Just when Chata seems to be getting better, she tells her mother that she is going to be with Santa Inez in Heaven soon.  She becomes much worse and the doctor advises Paula, whom Chata has said resembles the saint, to pose as Santa Inez that night to tell the little girl that she is not needed in Heaven.  The next day Chata is miraculously almost well; she tells the doctor that Santa Inez came to her and told her that she did not need her in Heaven; that she was with her always and that she had work for her to do.  The doctor congratulates Paula for doing a fine job of posing, but what Paula has to tell the doctor convinces them that a miracle has taken place.

THE NIGHT MY FATHER CAME HOME                        Originally aired - 12-20-53

 

Directed by Robert Florey; screenplay by Richard Morris, from a story by Jeanne Melton.  This is the story of an adorable five-year-old who believes that if “you want something bad enough and you say your prayers and keep your face clean and everything, you always get it some way.”  Little Joey Dodds is too short to reach the mailboxes, so he asks a postal worker to mail his letter to Santa Claus.  Joey tells Al that his father was in an accident and went away and that his Mom says he’s not coming back, but Joey says he’s got to come back because he promised him some marbles and an electric train for Christmas.  Al reluctantly takes Joey’s letter and writes a response “from Santa” telling Joey not to count on his father coming home.  He also gives Joey some marbles.  Joey is still expecting another letter from Santa; he had asked Al to write it.  Joey comes back to ask for his letter from Santa and Al loses his patience and tells him to go home.  Joey tells Al he doesn’t like him and leaves.  Christmas Eve he takes Al some cookies and tells Al that his mom said he shouldn’t have bothered Al because his father wasn’t coming home.  Joey wants to buy a big Christmas tree; he has less than a dollar.  Al tells Joey he knows a guy who sells big Christmas trees for a quarter and on the way to picking up the tree, Al stops off at a store to “take care of business.”  When Joey’s Mom comes home, Al and Joey have the tree up and totally decorated and Joey is starting to put together an electric train set that was delivered earlier!  Mrs. Dodds invites Al to have some coffee and fruitcake; Joey thinks that with Al there, “it’s just like having my father home for Christmas.”

Directed by Robert Florey; screenplay by Richard Morris from a story by Phyllis Parker and Henry Staudigl.  This charming romantic comedy is set in New Orleans.  Newton Ralston is the manager of a small hotel and he has never encountered a guest quite like Sally Webster.  She seems to test every facet of his managerial and customer-relations skills until something she says makes him realize that she is no ordinary guest.  Then the story takes an unusual twist as he makes a decision about whether or not the customer is always right.

Directed by Robert Florey; screenplay by William Bruckner.  A mystery storywriter boards a plane using another’s reservation, is given poisoned gum, and becomes deathly ill.  Convinced it was a case of mistaken identity and her only clue being a fake telegram she received upon boarding the plane, Peggy tracks down the lady who was to have received the telegram as well as the sender.  She discovers that they are both dead—one an apparent suicide and the other run down a day later by a hit and run driver.  Who is the "lady killer" and why did he do it?  Peggy is determined to find out.
